UFC's Spartanburg office recognized for seizing the day on behalf of fathers

The Spartanburg office of the Upstate Fatherhood Coalition was an award-winner at the SC Center for Fathers and Families' annual Christmas luncheon in Columbia on Tuesday, Dec. 16.

Carpe Diem is a Latin phrase meaning "Seize the Day." The Center's Jessica All presented the Carpe Diem award to the Spartanburg team for doing a better job than any other fatherhood program in South Carolina of seizing the day for Dads in 2014.

"Today, there is a fatherhood program among us that has successfully seen and seized opportunities to improve the future for fathers and families in their community," Ms. All said, citing the Spartanburg UFC for:

  • Developing a partnership with Adult Education to further the educational opportunities for participants.
  • Developing a relationship with SC Works to allow time and space for participants in boot camp to do resumes.
  • Working with its local DSS office to cultivate a referral process for parents who had either lost custody, were about to lose it, or were cited by Child Protective Services as needing parenting education.

Since October 2012, the program has held an additional 96 parenting sessions for these referred individuals, and 259 of those referred have received certificates for completing parenting education. Because of this, several of these improved parents have had their children returned to them.

Congratulations to the whole Spartanburg team, for choosing to embrace and take action on the opportunities placed before it!
