A Father's Place recognized as SC Fatherhood Program of the Year

At the SC Center for Fathers and Families' Christmas luncheon Tuesday at Cobblestone Park Golf Club, fatherhood programs from across the state were acknowledged for excellence in 2014.

But the biggest recognition of all went to A Father's Place, recognized as the Program of the Year. A Father's Place, with locations in Conway, Georgetown and Myrtle Beach, received the award for embodying all of the qualities of a mission-driven organization that strives for excellence.

In presenting the award, Pat Littlejohn, the executive director of the Center, said, "The primary reason for A Father's Place success falls squarely on the shoulders of its leader, Wallace Evans."

Quoting from a phrase adapted from the writings of St. Augustine, she said, "Wallace has indeed inspired us as he has also encouraged his staff and the fathers who find refuge, hope, guidance and tough love when they come through the doors of A Father's Place. His loving heart has set ours on fire."

She cited many reasons for the award, but one anecdote stood out with regard to Mr. Evans' effectiveness as an advocate for fathers: "Two years ago when we were fighting to overturn the governor's veto on funding, a representative stood on the House floor and passionately spoke about his personal knowledge of the program and its impact in the community," said Ms. Littlejohn.

"I cannot think of a greater honor when someone else tells your story so enthusiastically."

The veto, by the way, was overridden.
