Men's Health

The Fatherhood Initiative has a holistic approach towards helping men achieve their goals in becoming better fathers which includes obtaining optimal health.  The Fatherhood Initiative has developed a health curriculum that includes topics on general men’s health issues such as smoking, blood pressure, cancers, substance abuse and information concerning sexual health such as sexually transmitted diseases and HIV.

Improving Access to Healthcare for Low-Income Non-Custodial Fathers is a project funded by the the Duke Endowment (and assisted by the  J. Marion Sims Foundation of Lancaster county)  to provide information, basic health services and support to help fathers of the South Carolina Center for Fathers and Families fatherhood programs gain access to the health care they need.  A nurse practitioner under this project is provided to supply direct health services for Richland, Lexington, Lancaster and Marlboro programs.  The nurse practitioner, along with health care partners, perform extensive health screenings, health education, provide direct health services such as DOT physicals, diagnosis and treatment for some medical conditions, and refers participants to outside medical resources if needed.
